Hi – I’m Ed, US Navy veteran and enthusiastic (but not very good) golfer. I was stationed aboard the USS John F Kennedy (CV67) out of Norfolk, VA in the early ’80s … That’s the 1980’s – not the 1880’s. I learned the value of hard work and dedication while serving in the Navy. It was during this time in my life that I took up golf. I love to play golf, so I use golfing terms to name all of my rubs … Par, Birdie, Pitching Wedge, Bunker, and Driver.
Like a lot of guys, I’m the grillmaster at home. If anything’s cooking over glowing coals, I’m holding the tongs. I’m a good cook, but I knew I could do more. So did my kids. On Father’s Day 2019, they gave me an electric smoker and it changed my life. As I smoked chicken, pork, and eventually my favorite, brisket, my culinary horizons expanded, and I learned dry rubs are the key to enhancing meat’s flavor and texture.
But grocery store spices … while not only tasting dull and uninspiring, were also full of salt and sugar. Typical rub manufacturers use these extensively because they are cheaper than garlic, paprika, and other higher quality ingredients.
